Eligibility
Resident membership of Green College is open to:
- Full-time UBC students age 19 or older who have been accepted into or are currently enrolled in a Masters, Medical Doctor, Juris Doctor or Doctoral Degree Program
- UBC-appointed Postdoctoral Fellows
- Visiting graduate students*
*A limited number of places are available each year to graduate students enrolled in degrees at other universities who have the status of Visiting Students or Visiting Scholars at UBC.
Resident membership is not open to UBC faculty members.
Application Process
How Do I Apply?
There are two steps to apply:
- Create a housing account application with the UBC Student Housing and Community Services (SHCS) website. If you have a UBC student number, please use this to login to the SHCS site here.
- Complete your application package for the Membership Committee (forms, supporting documents, etc.) for Green College here.
Supporting documents include:
Graduate, MD and JD Students
- A Personal Statement of Interest outlining your specific interdisciplinary interests or pursuits, extracurricular activities that demonstrate community involvement, and any relevant previous experience of living in an academic community or other communal environments. Explain why you are interested in the College and how you intend to get involved in College life. Guidelines: One page, 500 words maximum, with word count indicated on the bottom right of page;
- Academic Curriculum Vitae (CV);
- Transcripts* for each post-secondary institution attended;
- Two Academic Letters of Reference.* Copies of letters of reference used for application to your department at UBC will be accepted;
- A Personal Letter of Reference. The letter should come from someone who knows you outside the classroom and can address the range and variety of your interests and ability to contribute to a culturally diverse residential community such as Green College. Candidates are encouraged to refer your personal referee to the College’s website for information about the College.
*For these items, our application portal will provide you an opportunity to invite someone, such as a graduate program coordinator from your UBC home department, to upload these documents in support of your application.
Postdoctoral Fellows
- A Personal Statement of Interest outlining your specific interdisciplinary interests or pursuits, extracurricular activities that demonstrate community involvement, and any relevant previous experience of living in an academic community or other communal environment. Explain why you are interested in the College and how you intend to get involved in College life. Guidelines: One page, 500 words maximum, with word count indicated on the bottom right of page;
- Academic Curriculum Vitae (CV);
- Copy of Offer Letter (or Letter of Employment) from UBC;
- Two Academic Letters of Reference. One letter of reference must be from your home university. The second letter must be from your UBC supervisor
- A Personal Letter of Reference. The letter should come from someone who knows you outside the classroom and can address the range and variety of your interests and ability to contribute to a culturally diverse residential community such as Green College. Candidates are encouraged to refer your personal referee to the College’s website for information about the College.
Important: Files missing any of the documents listed above will NOT be reviewed by the Membership Committee.
When Should I Apply?
- Applications can be made at any time, although we encourage early application.
- Most applications for September admission are received between February through May.
- The Membership Committee meets monthly to review completed applications received by noon (12pm Pacific) on the 15th of each month, starting in the month of March.
- Applicants whose completed applications were received before the mid-month deadline will be notified of their status by the end of the month.
- All decisions of the Membership Committee are final. Applicants who are not successful in a given round may not re-apply for the same contract year, but may apply for the next contract year. Contract years run September through August.
