  • Join two expert researchers on air pollution inequality as they address the importance of data collection, transparency and interpretation in their respective fields. Amanda Giang will discuss how improved data transparency and community right-to-know about industrial emitters can inform targeted interventions to reduce exposure disparities in Canada; and how community knowledge is a crucial complement to traditional air quality monitoring and modelling through community-based air quality monitoring and citizen science projects in Vancouver. Sally Pusede will then will discuss her work advancing application of satellite remote sensing for observing neighbourhood-scale air pollution inequalities in US cities, and improving our understanding of their emission sources, chemistry and variability. She will discuss avenues and barriers for the future, with satellite measurements having the potential to transform the demands people can place on their policymakers. The session will be structured around short presentations by the two experts followed by a discussion.

Amanda Giang is the Assistant Professor in the Institute for Resources, Environment & Sustainability and Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. Her research addresses environmental policy analysis challenges through an interdisciplinary lens, with a focus on developing better modeling tools and methods for assessing and addressing pollution and environmental injustice and understanding the links between air quality, decarbonization and equity to inform planning decisions. She serves on the Early Career Editorial Advisory Board Member for Environmental Science & Technology.

Sally Pusede is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia. Her research group advances the application of satellite remote sensing for describing, understanding and informing decision-making around air pollution environmental justice issues. Sally is co-Director of the Repair Lab, an interdisciplinary environmental justice laboratory at the University of Virginia. The Repair Lab hosts a practitioner-in-residence program for activists and organizers to develop environmental justice policies on issues affecting their communities.

Social and environmental sciences converge in this interdisciplinary series as they explore how environmental inequality issues in society intersect with health, history, art, education, science, law, Indigeneity and more. Series conveners aim to delve into the complex nature of environmental injustice, exploring the factors contributing to these disparities and the communities disproportionately affected by them. Join them through this seminar series as they dig and unearth perspectives to promote awareness around environmental injustices.

Series Conveners: Hassan Ahmad, Law; Nadine Borduas-Dedekind, Chemistry; William Brown, Theatre and Film; Tim Frandy, Central European and Northern European Studies; Keunhyun Park, Forest Resources Management; Ethan Raker, Sociology; and Tina Wilson, Social Work
