Timothy Findley was a foundational figure in Canadian Literature and has been one of Canada’s best-loved writers. Known especially for his novels The Wars and Famous Last Words, he was also a playwright, short story writer and memoirist. UBC Killam Professor Emerita Sherrill Grace’s illuminating new study of Findley is the first comprehensive biography to be written of him. In this inaugural event of a new Green College series she reflects on the continuing importance of Findley’s life and work, in conversation with Hal Wake, formerly Artistic Director of the Vancouver International Writers Festival. Findley believed that “Imagination can save us.” When better than now to discover what he meant, and the senses in which it could still be true, or truer than ever?
Sherrill Grace is an Officer of the Order of Canada and a UBC University Killam Professor Emerita. She has published extensively on Canadian literature and culture, with books on Malcolm Lowry, Margaret Atwood, Tom Thomson, Sharon Pollock, the Canadian North, and Canada and the 2 World Wars. Her most recent book is Tiff: A Life of Timothy Findley (WLUP, 2020).
Hal Wake has been engaged with the literary community in Canada for almost 40 years. In the mid '80's he was the book producer for CBC Radio's Morningside with Peter Gzowski. He has hosted or moderated hundreds of literary events at Festivals in Vancouver, Victoria, New York, London, Melbourne and Sydney Australia. He has interviewed Alice Munro, Margaret Atwood, Salman Rushdie, Richard Ford and Timothy Findley among many others. He is an honorary member of the Writers Union of Canada, on the board of the Writers Trust of Canada and was Artistic Director of the Vancouver Writers Fest for 12 years.
