Mr. Hansen is a prolific scientist and member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. He is recognized for speaking truth to power and for outlining actions needed to protect the future of young people and all species on the planet. His 1988 U.S. Congressional testimony on climate change helped raise broad awareness of global warming, and his advocacy of action to avoid dangerous climate change. Dr. Hansen has received numerous awards including the Sophie and Blue Planet Prizes, the 2009 Carl-Gustaf Rossby Research Medal, the highest honour bestowed by the American Meteorological Society, and the 2013 NASA Distinguished Service Medal due to his research in climatology. Dr. Hansen was listed as one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in 2006, and in 2012 Foreign Policy designated him as one of its Top 100 Global Thinkers.
