The Nettle Dress is a poetic 2023 documentary by Dylan Howitt that follows the seven-year activity of artist Allan Brown to glean, process, spin, weave, and sew a dress of local stinging nettles. We will be screening it as an opening to the Slow Fashion Show at the Museum of Anthropology (MOA), opening at 7 pm the same night. The film will be hosted by Green College Leading Scholars Alex Tavasoli and Alexandra Peck, both members of UBC's new Circular Textiles, Sustainable Fibre, Slow Fashion Research Cluster.

Following the film, there is a short five minute walk to MOA where visitors can explore the galleries, including their newest exhibition Nuxalk Nation in advance of the Slow Fashion Show. The fashion show is included in the ticketed admission to MOA. (Note: Indigenous visitors as well as UBC faculty, staff, and students always receive free admission at MOA.)

Slow Fashion Season is an accessible annual forum for exchanging research, building skills, and presenting inspiring initiatives and creative production in the realm of sustainable textiles and apparel. It is an initiative of the new Circular Textiles, Sustainable Fibre, Slow Fashion interdisciplinary research cluster at UBC that includes faculty, staff and students aiming to address the complex problems of textile waste and consumption by researching alternative textile systems and fibre materials. The UBC faculty leads are visual artist Germaine Koh; mechanical engineer Dr Alexandra Tavasoli; Audain Chair in Historical Indigenous Art Dr Alexandra Peck; art historian Dr T'ai Smith; costume designer Jacqueline Firkins; Dr Qinshi Tu from UBC's BioProducts Institute; and Dr Abbas Milani, director of UBC’s Materials and Manufacturing Research Institute. UBC Slow Fashion Season is on until March 27, 2025.
