  • In contrast to her marginal place in today’s canon and historiography, Marianna Martines enjoyed prominent status during her life time. She was the first female member of the Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna (the highest honour that could be bestowed upon a composer at that time), had some of her compositions publicly performed while she was alive, and enjoyed the support of Empress Maria Theresa, among others. This lecture recital will present a performance of her keyboard sonata in g major, followed by discussion of the piece in the context of her oeuvre.

Judith Valerie Engel is a Viennese concert pianist, currently studying for her DMA at UBC in the class of Dr. Terence Dawson. She started playing the piano at five years old. Her main teachers were Pavel Gililov with whom she did her BA and MA at the Mozarteum University Salzburg, and Mag. Nina Igudesman. Engel won numerous national and international competitions. Concert tours saw her performing in over a dozen European and non-European countries. Her recordings have been aired by multiple European radio and TV stations. In addition to her work as a performer, Engel is doing research on Gender Studies in music, which she also taught at the Mozarteum after finishing her Master’s and before moving to Vancouver to start her doctorate.
