Rue des Rosiers can be read as a novel about contingency, about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It is also a novel about choice, about the necessity to make conscious choices about who we are, what we value, and how we want to live. At 25, Sarah is rudderless, making decisions by flipping a penny. She is caught in a paralysis which keeps her from seizing her own life. However, when she is fired from her Toronto job, a chance stay in Paris opens her up to new direction and purpose.
Rhea Tregebov is the author of seven books of poetry, as well as two novels. Her second novel, Rue des Rosiers, was released by Coteau Books in May 2019. She is an Associate Professor Emerita in the Creative Writing Program at UBC. -
