Much More Than a Blood Clot: How Blood Coagulation Shapes our Immunity and Metabolic Health
Abbey Sugars-Keen, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
When we think about blood coagulation, we usually think of a scab forming over a cut or of cardiovascular diseases like heart attack and stroke. There’s a general conception of blood clotting as a discrete physiological process that acts independently of the body’s other defense mechanisms in response to injury. However, in recent years, a growing body of research is overturning this paradigm. This presentation will explore how blood coagulation works and how it shapes our body’s ability to fend off viral infections like COVID-19, suppress tumour growth, and regulate our metabolism.

Abbey Sugars-Keen is pursuing an MSc in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in Dr. Edward Conway’s laboratory at the UBC Centre for Blood Research. Her current research investigates the molecular mechanisms behind the crosstalk between thrombosis and insulin resistance in cases of type 2 diabetes.
