The word quantum has created a lot of buzz recently in the pop-media with movies, TV shows and books making reference to the science of quantum. In most cases, the word quantum is treated as some sort of voodoo magical science black box that will solve all our problems or create mayhem, if left unchecked. This representation is somewhat misleading.

Quantum physics is important for the technologies of the future and it is truly fascinating, but as someone who uses it everyday, it is a lot less impressive than what pop media claims it to be. In this presentation, we will attempt to define and demystify quantum for you, provide a brief history of quantum physics and still keep you convinced that while time travel and teleportation might be all but practically impossible, quantum physics is still mind-blowingly interesting. Time permitting, the presentation will also include a brief overview of quantum computers and the role of topology in quantum physics.

Hrishikesh Patel (he/him) obtained a BSc in Combined Honours Physics and Mathematics in 2023 from the University of British Columbia (UBC) and is currently pursuing an MSc in Physics at UBC with a focus on quantum information and condensed matter physics. While he has been deeply curious and interested in physics since his early teens, it has proven immensely difficult for him to just pick a field and focus on it. As a result, he has worked in numerous fields including statistical physics, quantum gravity theories, photonics, nuclear physics and now condensed matter physics. While he cannot claim expertise in any of these, he has learned many things about the history of these fields and can talk at lengths about it, if prompted. Outside of science, he enjoys running, biking and spending time with his family/friends.
