  • Concrete is the main material used in most non-residential building in Canada. However, concrete is known for emitting carbon dioxide and it takes a lot of energy to produce. Wood, conversely, is an organic material that naturally stores carbon. With the growing concern of climate change, the construction industry in Canada has been moving towards more environmentally friendly designs and materials, with a push  to use wood for larger scale structures. This push is being advanced through the use of digital fabrication, making wood no longer a building material primarily associated with the past.

Meena Chowdhury completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto studying architecture, and she continues her studies at the University of British Columbia as a Master's student. Currently, she is focusing her research on digital fabrication with wood or textiles.
