Reaching Beyond Mars: Re-Imagining the PhD through the Public Scholars Initiative

  • Join Emily and Saori as they discuss the UBC Public Scholar Initiative, provide advice and suggestions on how to become a Public Scholar, and present their own Public Scholar Project. This interactive member series will also be a chance for you to ask questions about your Public Scholar Initiative application.

    Pianist, Emily Logan is a 3rd year student in the Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance at the University of British Columbia and is a UBC Public Scholar. Emily received a Master of Music in Piano Performance program from the University of Ottawa and a Bachelor of Music from Mount Allison University. She is also an alumnus of the Aspen Music Festival and School. As a performer, she has given solo and chamber music recitals, and was guest artist at the American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. Emily is the recipient of numerous awards, including local and national competition placement, UBC scholarships, and ArtsNB Grants. Emily’s research work focuses on the wellbeing of musicians, looking specifically at interventions for Music Performance Anxiety.

    Saori Ogura is a PhD student, a Public Scholar and a Liu Scholar, whose works combine ecological, arts-based and occupational science perspectives. She has won prizes for her drawings and photography, particularly for her project documenting her time living in Sikkim and Darjeeling in India’s Eastern Himalayas. Her doctoral research explores meaning around traditional practices, especially the drought-tolerant small grains cultivation and associated knowledge for the Shona Indigenous community in Mazvihwa, Zimbabwe.
