Urbanponics: The Future of Food Production and Consumption within Cities
Aeroponic and hydroponic systems are controlled environments that are now being used in “precision farming.” The fruits and vegetables grown within these controlled environments allow farmers to eliminate the need for chemicals and pesticides, reduce water intake by up to 90%, and achieve higher crop yields on less land than is needed in traditional farming methods. What does this new mode of production mean for cities, especially when considering the spatial and experiential effects that come from the buildings that house these farms? This talk explores the design process of combining food production and consumption through the typology of the grocery store. How can architecture change our relationship with food?
