This talk will focus on the emergence of "public opinion" around the Joseph Brodsky affair and how and why the intelligentsia defended Brodsky. Moreover, the presentation will compare the Brodsky affair with events in the 1960s and 1970s involving the intelligentsia's defence of intellectual freedom.
