The Gold Eaters

Novelist and historian Ronald Wright is the award-winning author of ten books published in sixteen languages and more than forty countries. A Short History of Progress, his CBC Massey Lectures, won the Libris Award for Non-Fiction Book of the Year and inspired Martin Scorsese’s 2011 film Surviving Progress. Mr. Wright’s first novel, A Scientific Romance, won Britain’s David Higham Prize and was chosen a book of the year by the New York Times, the Globe and Mail, and the Sunday Times. His earlier works Stolen Continents, Time Among the Maya, and Cut Stones & Crossroads, are now available in Penguin Modern Classics with new introductions by Jan Morris, Pico Iyer, and Alberto Manguel. Mr. Wright will be speaking about his new book, The Gold Eaters, a novel set during the Spanish invasion of the Inca Empire in the 1530s, a great turning point in history that –as Adam Smith and Karl Marx both noted –laid the foundations of our modern world.
