Transforming Sounds / Altered Selves: How Music Changes in Time, Changes Us, and Changes our Worlds

Piano repertoire has undergone a significant transformation in the past 50 years. The contemporary works are no longer based on traditional models but continue to forge new ground as composers challenge pianists’ interpretive and technical abilities to the extreme.

Reviewed as “a tremendous pianist” (CBC Radio 2), Dr. Réa Beaumont  (RAY-ah BO-mont) is an award-winning performer and composer. Her critically acclaimed recordings, often described as “beautiful” (American Public Media), continue to be aired around the world. She has collaborated with renowned composers such as R. Murray Schafer to premiere many new works, including those commissioned for her by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Réa's solo performances include the Canadian Opera Company’s “Piano Virtuoso Series” at the Four Seasons Centre for the Arts, the Canadian Broadcasting Centre’s Glenn Gould Studio (Toronto), Calgary’s Rozsa Centre, Nuit Blanche, Opera House (Italy), Pro Musica, “Sonic Boom” Festival, CONTACT Contemporary Music and mainstage at Toronto’s Yonge-Dundas Square. Réa is the recipient of the Ontario Arts Council’s prestigious Chalmers Arts Fellowship and she has received multiple awards from FACTOR, Ontario Arts Council, SOCAN and The Canada Council for the Arts. Réa has been a faculty member at the University of British Columbia, the Royal Conservatory of Music, and the University of Toronto. Visit her website for more information: www.reabeaumont.com.

Dr. Beaumont will also be performing at Green College on March 8, 8-9 pm, with Richard Beaudoin, Composer; Visiting Research Fellow, Royal Academy of Music, London. Click here for details on the March 8 event.
