  • Gender equality is a key principle of human rights. This talk shows how, in a space where many observers presume that law is absent, women are embracing Islam’s foundational sources – the Qur’an (Islam’s holy book) and the Hadith (records of the Prophet Muhammad’s statements and actions) – to promote women’s rights and gender equality in Somalia.

Mark Fathi Massoud is Director of the Legal Studies Program and Associate Professor of Politics at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
