  • While certain aspects of art and aesthetics are plausibly universal, the aesthetic categories discussed in depth by thinkers of the 'Western' tradition are insufficient for the understanding of the aesthetic languages, practices, and objects of non-'Western' aesthetic life. The central example of this talk will be the aesthetic category of 'Iki' as reconstructed by Kuki Shuzo, and the reasons for its resistance to easy or determinate translation.
