Writer in Residence at Green College: 2024 Call for Applications

Green College, a residential facility for graduate students and a public venue for non-curricular academic and artistic presentations at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver), invites applications for the post of Writer in Residence, with no restriction as to genre (including fiction and nonfiction), for placement at some point in the academic years of 2024-25 through to 2028-29.

The appointed writer, who will be a Canadian citizen (or permanent resident of Canada) with a home address outside the BC Lower Mainland, will live at the College on the UBC campus for three months (September-November or January-March). Activities of the residency will be comprised of: the writer’s current work (at least 60%); presenting that or other work in public plus organizing and hosting public activities at Green College with other writers, artists, scholars, etc. invited by the visiting writer with support from the College (25%); advising members of the UBC and wider local community on their own literary projects (15%).

The College will provide accommodation (suitable for double occupancy), partial board (breakfast and dinner, Monday through Friday), office support, a stipend of $22,000 CAD (before taxes) paid in monthly installments, and up to $2,000 CAD toward return travel expenses (economy class airfare). Some additional funding will be available for the public programming of the residency.

Interested applicants should submit the following materials by email to gc.programs@ubc.ca:

  1. Curriculum vitae;
  2. Writing sample (maximum 25 pages);
  3. Letter of Intent that should include: their reasons for wishing to join the Green College community; their qualifications for the residency; a plan of work; and a proposal for public programming at the College (including a series title, short description of the series theme and overarching rationale and short descriptions of three to four events with invited guests);
  4. Two letters of reference sent under separate covers to the same email above.

Applicants should have a record of publication in well-recognized venues. Previous experience of mentoring and/or program organizing in comparable settings will be taken into account by the selection committee. Successful applicants will join a prestigious list of nearly 20 earlier Writers in Residence at Green College beginning with Lynn Coady (1999-2000) and most recently with Margaret Christakos (2021-22) and Colleen Murphy (2023).

The deadline for the submission of all materials is: Wednesday, April 10 at noon (Pacific). Inquiries should be addressed to the Assistant Principal, Programs (Heather Muckart) at gc.programs@ubc.ca.
