In February and March 2026, artist Jade Yumang was in residence at UBC Green College, a residency co-organized with the Department of Art History, Visual Art, and Theory. 

Green College resident member and UBC journalism student, Claire Donnan, interviewed Jade in their UBC studio.

In this video, Jade shares their vision for “Queer Form Unfollows Function,” explaining a fibre-based practice that connects weaving, the body, and queer Filipino histories. They discuss labour-intensive techniques like backstrap weaving and double weave, and how imagery from talismanic vests and queer argot inform their work. Jade reflects on weaving as a process of endurance, memory, and protection, and describes how experimentation during his residency at UBC and Green College shaped the development of the project.
