Science and poetry are often opposed, one trying to describe reality with rational thought, the other being a more lyrical expression of the mind and therefore not necessarily true.

To change from academic studies, I propose to show you a subjective point of view on the relation between poetry and science, their similarity and complementarity. First we will compare symmetrically these two “fields,” from well know poems, facts and theories, and then we will try to understand, with examples, where poetry can be found in scientific expressions, and how it makes it beautiful!
Arthur Després, is graduate engineer, from the University of Lyon, in France. He worked one year in research for the steel making company ArcelorMittal, and is currently doing his PhD at UBC in the department of Materials Engineering on hot forming of stainless steel.
