In this presentation, Alejandra from Mexico and Mari from Venezuela share their trajectories in academia as newcomers to BC, Canada. They reflect on their paths over the past three decades and provide examples of major transitions and decisions—those turning points that ended up shaping their lives. Particularly, they will highlight their strengths, explain their challenges, and expand on the transformations they have experienced. Finally, they will share their perspectives on what the implications are for their children in this journey of being immigrants in Canada. Alejandra will speak about the process of making meaning as an immigrant in academia. She will narrate momentums, images and stories that have impacted her journey in the BC institutions in which she has worked. Mari will speak to her “double life” experience, recognizing the ongoing value and the stress associated with her academic job responsibilities while witnessing and relating to social and political instability in her home country.
